What is organ transplantation?
Organ transplantation is a type of surgery done either on living or cadaveric donor. Organ transplantation is a medical procedure in which a failing or damaged organ is removed and replaced with another one from a living or cadaveric source. Apart from heart transplantation, most organ transplants can be done from living donor to recipient. Liver, kidney, pancreas, small bowel and cardiac transplants are performed from cadaveric donor to recipient.
Organ transplantation surgeries are performed with the help of modern technology and techniques
Organ transplant surgeries are crucial and delicate surgeries, however with the ever-innovating modern medicine technology and techniques it is possible to perform totally safe, bloodless surgeries. For instance; with laparoscopic surgeries (minimally invasive) patients are able to get back to their daily lives within a week or 10 days, without having any physical limitations.
Who can be a donor?
Transplantation between up to 4th degree relatives may be performed as required by the relevant Ministry of Health regulation. Non-relative organ transplantation is also possible upon the relevant approval from the regional Ethics Committees. Donor exchange, also called cross-transplantation, may also be performed within the limits of the law.
What type of facility to choose when considering organ transplantation?
Hospitals need to be offering a service at a high standard to be able to perform organ transplants. Organ transplantation is not related to surgery alone. The collaboration of outpatient clinics, laboratories, imaging units, inpatient department and several clinics of the respective center carries a great deal of importance for the pre- and posttransplant periods.
You could be a great surgeon, possess a valuable anesthesia team or have a state-of-the-art technology operating rooms but this does not always secure success. Organ transplant requires a multidisciplinary approach. Therefore, only healthcare centers which have completed the training required are permitted to perform organ transplant surgeries.
